Study and Meeting Space

The AASC lounge and study room can be reserved for registered club and organization meetings and study groups. Students are always welcome to come by to relax in the center and take advantage of quiet study time in the Madagascar Room. The Madagascar Room is named after the world’s fourth largest island, located on the south east coast of Africa. The study room was so named after the Madagascar island because of its adjacent location to the AASC. Its adjacent location does not reduce its integrated role with the services of the AASC.

Library

Free Printing and Email Access

The African American Student Center has Ethernet connections for fast connection to the Information Super Highway. Four PC computers are available for student use to assist in the accomplishment of academic tasks.

Everyone is welcome to enjoy the benefits of the AASC. Come by any day during open hours for a tour. You will valuable information as part of your tour.

African American Student Center Scholarships

The AASC offers an annual scholarship to a first year or transfer student who has demonstrated leadership at their previous institution and involvement in their campus and surrounding community to serve the needs of the Black/African American population (3.0 GPA required).

The AASC offers a second annual scholarship to a current student who has demonstrated leadership and involvement at Cal Poly Pomona and has worked to unify and strengthen the existing Black/African American community (2.5 GPA required).

The Cultural Centers’ Grad Center

The Cultural Centers’ Grad Center is a resource center created to help individuals interested in pursuing a post-baccalaureate degree. A variety of information on national universities recruiting underrepresented students in Masters and Doctoral degrees is available. Information for law school, medical school and graduate school entrance examinations, admissions, professional development and career preparation resources are also available. OSLCC Public Relations Center

The public relations center located at the Asian and Pacific Islander Student Center is open to all students, student groups and organizations for the purpose of creating banners, making fliers and sharing innovative marketing ideas. Students may check out banner paint with their Student ID between the hours of 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM at the Asian and Pacific Islander Student Center front desk. Computers are on a first come basis and free printing is available if you bring your own paper.

Leadership Development

The Black Advance Leadership Caucus

Black clubs and organizations receive valuable skills as they network with other students to form a support base for the academic year. These meetings are for current leaders as well as students interested in learning more about themselves and their leadership potential. Students gain a background in leadership, how groups work and program planning to enhance their personal and professional development.

Campus and Community Resources

Many students, staff and community members come to the AASC for resources on programming, events, health and wellness, and information on Black culture and African American history. The AASC staff works to connect our community members by providing names, locations and contact information that will best serve them and provide them with the requested information. The AASC staff makes several tutoring referrals to the University Advising Center, Learning Resource Center and advisors of the academic colleges. Many collaborative programs and events are made possible by donations and involvement from the larger campus, Pomona and surrounding communities.
