Students with disabilities are encouraged to register with the DRC to facilitate their use of accommodations and support services available through our office. Although students are not required to register with the DRC just because they have a disability, students must register with our office if they plan to use testing accommodations and other services in support of their disability while at Cal Poly Pomona. Depending on the nature of the documented disability, these services may include note-takers, alternate media services for reading, extended time for exams, use of a distraction-free environment for testing, interpreting and real-time captioning services, and access to the technology lab.
Following are some Frequently Asked Questions regarding eligibility for receiving accommodations and services as a student with a disability.

I have a verified disability. How do I register with the DRC?
If you believe you have a history of disability and/or disability documentation that qualifies you for services, contact our office to make an appointment for an initial intake with one of our counselors. Disability documentation for the purpose of providing accommodations must both establish disability and provide adequate information on the functional impact of the disability so that effective accommodations can be identified. If you believe you have such documentation, please continue to the section for Registration Procedures below, and follow the steps indicated.

Does my disability qualify me for DRC services?
You may have a condition that would qualify as a disability, but are not sure if this condition makes you eligible to receive accommodations and services. Registration Procedures
The following is an overview of the steps involved in registering your disability in order to receive academic accommodations and support services thru the DRC.
- You must have a “physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities.” Please refer to the United States’ Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (amended, 1978), which protects individuals from discrimination if they have a record of such impairments or if they are regarded as having such impairments. The United States Department of Justice website has more information: http://www.usdoj.gov/crt/ada/adahom1.htm
- You must submit a copy of your original documentation from a qualified professional regarding the nature and extent of your disability, and its impact on your ability to access academic programs. The DRC should receive your documentation at least five (5) business days prior to your appointment, or your appointment will need to be rescheduled. In addition, you will be required to fill out an Intake Form and Symptom Checklist. In order to save time, you may print and fill out the forms ahead of time. (See below.)
- Call the DRC at (909) 869-3333 to schedule an intake appointment. You will be scheduled with the counselor who has a specialty in the area of your suspected or known disability who can best assist you with your needs.
- During the intake appointment, the counselor will conduct an interview and review your disability-related background information and available documentation. The counselor will either confirm that your documentation is adequate, or indicate that additional documentation is needed. If the documentation is adequate to establish eligibility, reasonable and available academic accommodations and services that address the specific functional impairments associated with your diagnosis will be prescribed. Appropriate referrals, recommendations, and assistance will be provided to students whose documentation may not be adequate to establish eligibility at this time.
- Following the Intake appointment and completion the Registration Process, eligible students will be provided with orientation(s) regarding DRC office procedures and the type of accommodations and services they are prescribed. Students must complete these orientations before they can begin to utilize their academic accommodations and services.
