How To Register With the DRC

Overview

Students with diagnosed* disabilities are encouraged to register with the DRC to facilitate their use of accommodations and support services available through our office. Although students are not required to register with the DRC just because they have a disability, students must register with our office if they plan to use testing accommodations and other services in support of their disability while at Cal Poly Pomona.

*Students who suspect that they may have a disability that interferes with their learning may receive referrals to appropriate and qualified professionals in the community who provide a sliding-fee scale for Cal Poly Pomona students.  Students may also be referred to their own health insurance plan, if available.  For a referral to a qualified professional, please contact DRC at 909.869.3333.

If students are receiving financial aid, DRC will coordinate with the Financial Aid Office to verify the need for supplemental funding to cover the costs of diagnostic/disability evaluation.

Once disability documentation is obtained, follow the DRC registration process.

Registration Process

The following is an overview of the steps involved in registering your disability in order to receive academic accommodations and support services thru the DRC.

1.       You must have a “physical or mental impairment that limits one or more of the major life activities.” Please refer to the United States’ Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (amended, 1978), which protects individuals from discrimination if they have a record of such impairments or if they are regarded as having such impairments.  The United States Department of Justice website has more information: http://www.usdoj.gov/crt/ada/adahom1.htm

2.       You must submit a copy of your original documentation from a qualified professional regarding the nature and extent of your disability, and its impact on your ability to access academic programs.  In addition, you will be required to submit the following forms: Student Intake & General Services.  In order to save time, you may print and fill out the forms ahead of time. Once we receive your documentation and required forms, the DRC counselor has ten (10) business days to review your documentation.  The counselor will determine if your documentation is adequate, or if additional documentation is needed.  We will contact you to schedule an Intake appointment or to request additional documentation.

3.       During the intake appointment, the counselor will conduct an interview and review your disability-related background information and available documentation. If the documentation is adequate to establish eligibility, reasonable and available academic accommodations and services that address the specific functional impairments associated with your diagnosis will be prescribed. Appropriate referrals, recommendations, and assistance will be provided to students whose documentation may not be adequate to establish eligibility at this time.

4.       Following the Intake appointment and completion of the Registration Process, eligible students will be provided with orientation(s) regarding DRC office procedures and the type of accommodations and services they are prescribed. Students must complete these orientations with a support services advisor(s) before they can begin to utilize their academic accommodations and services.
