Many community organizations, foundations and businesses offer scholarships. Start your research early by browsing the scholarship directories and using the free search engines on the web. Also, contact the personnel offices of companies in your area or where your parents work to see if they offer scholarships. Scholarship leads may also be listed in magazines or on web sites related to your interests or skills.

Individual Scholarships

www.soroptimist.org: The Soroptimist International of Pomona/Claremont is offering the Women's Opportunity Award of $1,500 to women who have primary financial responsibility in their family unit, attend or have been accepted to an undergraduate degree program and have financial need. Deadline: December 15, 2009

www.foreclosure.com/education/scholarship/index.html: The Foreclosure.com Scholarship Program is offering a $5,000 and a $1,000 scholarship to the best essays entitled "How to Solve the Foreclosure Crisis." Deadline: December 21, 2009

www.scholarshipamerica.org/talbotswomen: The Talbots Charitable Foundation, in keeping with its long-standing tradition of helping women succeed, is proud to present the 2010 Talbots Scholarship Foundation and the inaugural Nancy Talbot Scholarship Award for perseverance and ingenuity. This program empowers women to enrich themselves through learning and achieve a college education later in life. Deadline: January 2, 2010

www.ocmensa.org: The American Mensa Education and Research Foundation is offering several scholarships ranging from $300 to $1,000 to students enrolled for the 2010-2011 academic year and residing in the area of a local Mensa Group. Deadline: January 15, 2010

http://www.krellinst.org/csgf: The Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship is open to full-time students who are planning to engage on an uninterrupted study toward a PhD degree in scientific or engineering disciplines with an emphasis in high-performance computing. Areas include, but are not limited to Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Astronomy, Biomedical Applications and Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Computational fluid dynamics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Oceanography, or Physics. Deadline: January 15, 2010

http://foundation.westernunion.com/ourProgramsScholarships.html: The Western Union Foundation is offering family scholarships of $1,5000 to $5,000 to students with at least one parent whose country of origin is outside the United States. Deadline: February 5, 2010

 
www.aws.org/foundation: The American Welding Society (AWS) offers three different scholarship programs: The District Scholarship Program, which is open to students pursuing a welding-related career; the National Scholarship Program, which contains individual scholarships each worth a minimum of $2,500 annually; and the International Scholarship Program, which is open to international students pursuing a degree in a welding-related field. www.chssc.org: The Chinese Historical Society of Southern California is offering a $1,000 David and Pearl Louie Scholarship to one undergraduate student and to one graduate student with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Deadline: March 26, 2010

www.usbank.com/cgi_w/cfm/studentloans/marketing.cfm: US Bank is offering forty, $1,000 scholarships to high school students and current college freshmen, sophomores or juniors who will be enrolled by September 2010 at an eligible four-year college or university. Deadline: March 31, 2010

www.degreedirectory.org/pages/business_scholarship.html: DegreeDirectory is offering a $1,000 scholarship for students pursuing business related majors. Deadline: April 1, 2010

www.goarmy.com/amedd/hpsp.jsp: The Health Professions Scholarship Program offers full tuition for any accredited medical, dental, veterinary, psychology or optometry program, plus a generous monthly stipend of more than $1,900. For more information, contact Johnny.Nguyen@usarec.army.mil

Applications for the following scholarships are not available online, but can be picked up at Cal Poly Pomona’s Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

The California Mathematics Council, Southern Section, is offering a scholarship to students enrolled in a credential program seeking to teach mathematics in elementary or secondary education. CMC-S is also offering grants to professionals who strive to improve the quality of mathematics instruction or who are interested in teaching mathematics but need re-training. Deadline: January 15, 2010

The Maria Cecilia Rosa Memorial Foundation Scholarship
is open to all Southern California students. Deadline: January 29, 2010

The Soroptimist International of Los Angeles
announces a fellowship award in the amount of $3,500 for a woman in Graduate Study during the 2010-2011 academic year, who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, has performed services for her community and has financial need. Deadline: January 31, 2010

The Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA)
is offering the Clair A. Hill Scholarship of $5,000 to students who demonstrate a commitment to the field of water resources, will be a junior or senior next academic year, will enroll full-time and will attend the complete school year. Deadline: February 1, 2010

The Whittier Area California Retired Teachers' Association
is offering $1,500 scholarships to upper-division and graduate students enrolled full-time planning to enter the teaching profession, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and plan to enter the teacher profession. Deadline: March 13, 2010

www.collegescholarships.org: is an "open-book" guide to scholarships. It's free and we don't solicit students for personal information of any kind or that of their friends. The design is a distinct departure from the scholarship search services that require students to create a profile and login.

California Latino Scholarship Directory: The Tomás Rivera Policy Institute (TRPI) proudly announces the release of an updated and expanded version of its popular scholarship directory, Latino College Dollars: Scholarships for California's Latino Students. The directory, which was originally released in early November 2006, has been viewed online more than 15,000 times and quickly sold out its initial print run.

Now in its second printing, the directory has been expanded to include more than 20 of the largest national scholarship funders, providing millions of dollars of additional scholarship opportunities for California's Latino students. Printed copies will be distributed through The Sallie Mae Fund's national "Paying for College" Bus Tour, which launches its California tour today. Additional scholarship directories will be distributed by the Tomás Rivera Policy Institute, and by the Hispanic Scholarship Fund at their programs throughout Southern California.

Funding for the second printing was made possible with a special grant from The Walt Disney Company.
