Native American Heritage Month 2009 Events:

The NASC & Native/Indigenous Student Alliance invites Cal Poly Pomona and its community to celebrate Native American Heritage Month: “Reclaiming Our Identity and Celebrating Our Culture.” Come join us for a month long series of workshops, film screenings, artistic and cultural expression that will explore topics and critical issues facing the Native American community.

Students will enjoy an evening of pizza and a movie at the dorms. “Edge of America” is a film that highlights how cultural differences can unite diverse ethnic communities rather than divide such groups that share very similar histories as colonized peoples.

This panel will be facilitated by Elton Naswood of the Red Circle Project, who will guide students through a discussion on the origins of Two-Spirit peoples and the present day realities these traditionaly highly revered Native-American community members face in western-dominant culture.

Chicana-Indigenous spoken word artist from East L.A., Felicia Montes, will give a multi-media presentation, as a former runner and current organizer of the Peace & Dignity Journeys.

Cal Poly students will share their Native Beading talents and hemp weaving skills with participants interested in learning how to create their own jewelry. Join us in this stress-releasing workshop filled with good vibes, music and socializing.

Stereotypes in Cinema"

Professor Sandi Dixon of the Ethnic and Women’s Studies department will facilitate this workshop on the stereotypes of Native Americans in films. A selection of films will be viewed while students and faculty can have the opportunity to engage in a discussion on society’s perception of Native Americans.
