Diversified Greek Council (DGC)

There are several Greek letter organizations at Cal Poly Pomona which are not chapters of a national or campus coordinating council. These Greek letter chapters are regional or national and are organized around a particular culture or interest.  These organizations fall under what is known at Cal Poly Pomona as the Diversified Greek Council.

Each of the independent organizations is a registered student organization with Cal Poly Pomona, and they typically hold their meetings on campus. Some are for men only, some for women only, and one accepts both male and female members.

The cultural Greek letter organizations sponsor service activities, educational workshops, social activities and cultural programs. Cal Poly Pomona will not be expanding the number of Cultural Fraternities and Sororities during the 2007-2008 academic year. For information on joining one of existing groups, contact the OSLCC office at (909) 869-4492 for the name of the contact person.

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) governs fraternities which are members of the National Interfraternity Conference (NIC). There are seven NIC fraternities at Cal Poly Pomona. All chapters maintain programs in the areas of scholarship, social activities, leadership development, community service and brotherhood.

Some of the IFC fraternities maintain chapter homes in the Pomona area. There may be opportunities to live in the chapter house once you become a member.

All of the NIC fraternities conduct year-round membership selection, with major recruitment periods (Rush) at the beginning of each semester. For more information on joining an IFC fraternities, contact the Greek Advisor at (909) 869-4492. In keeping with national policies, all fraternity rush events are alcohol-free.

National Pan-Hellenic Conference (NPHC)

The National Pan-Hellenic Council realizes that bringing new members into the fraternities and sororities is based upon the aspirant's possession of specific qualifications. Individual chapters are guided by standards that promote the building of strong and effective chapters.

In 1990 the international presidents of the affiliate fraternities and sororities collectively decided to eliminate 'pledging' as a condition of membership in their respective organizations. A membership intake process has been implemented within each NPHC member organization, a process that eliminates pledging as a requirement for initiation. Each affiliate organization implements the guidelines and details of its own membership intake process. As such, there are to be no "lines," "pledges," and certainly no hazing as a requirement for membership into any of the NPHC organizations.

Any student who knows of any "pledging" activity should immediately contact the Office of Student  Life and the national fraternity or sorority headquarters immediately. Membership to a NPHC fraternity or sorority is a life-long commitment, not just a college experience. The majority of each member's fraternal experience is as an alumni member.

It is important that each interested student take the time to learn about the history, aims and national programs of each organization to fully appreciate and understand the depth of Black Greek Letter Organizations.

This council is composed of fraternities and sororities which are members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). These historically African-American fraternities hold social events and philanthropic events, incorporating the participation of their alumni members in citywide chapters. All eight of the organizations are very active in community service activities.

The membership intake procedures for NPHC chapters take place during both the Fall, Winter and Spring quarters. For more information regarding each individual sorority and fraternity including a contact person, please contact the OSLCC office at (909) 869-4492.

Panhellenic Council

The four national sororities at Cal Poly Pomona which are members of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) are governed by the Panhellenic Association. These organizations conduct one "formal rush" per year, just after classes begin in the fall. Thereafter, chapters with membership spaces remaining continue to accept new members throughout the academic year.

The NPC sororities have balanced calendars of activities consisting of philanthropic projects, sisterhood activities, social events, educational programs, alumnae interaction and recognition events. They promote the development of each member to her fullest potential, in a supportive and nurturing organization. For more information about the NPC sororities, contact the Greek Advisor at (909) 869-4492.
