v To represent the diversity of LGBT communities. No two LGBT people are exactly the same, nor do they share the exact same experiences or viewpoints. Therefore, Speaker's Bureau members should make every effort to emphasize this diversity and to speak from a personal point of view, rather than attempting to speak for the entire LGBT community.
v To make real the oppression of LGBT people. One reason why anti-gay propaganda such as the "Special Rights" campaign occurred is because many people do not realize or believe that LGBT people are oppressed. It is important to give concrete examples of ways you have been discriminated against or the ways that homo, bi or trans-phobia has adversely impacted your life.
v To contradict myths and stereotypes. Many people still hold distorted views and beliefs of LGTB communities. Through dialogue these perspectives can be challenged.
v To outreach and build allies. There may be audience members who may be questioning their own sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Similarly, there may be audience members interested in learning more about other groups. We are there to serve as a resource to all participants.
