An "Incomplete Authorized" (I) signifies that not all the requirement of a course has been completed in the prescribed time period, but that due to justified reasons, the faculty member has determined that work can be completed at later date within some agreed upon conditions.
The awarding of an "I" requires a meeting between the student and the faculty member, to discuss the requirements for the removal of the grade.
The agreement on the manner and time by which the requirements of the course must be fully met must be recorded in writing. This record will be kept on file in the department office and a copy is given to the student.
The general university policy states that students must complete the work for the incomplete course within a period of one calendar year, beginning the end of the term in which the "I" was assigned, and the faculty has assigned a specific letter grade reflecting work completed. Failure to complete the assigned work will result in an "I" being converted to an "IC" grade. The grade of "IC" is has the effect of a failing grade on student's grade point average and progress point computation.
Executive Order 171, however, specifies that exceptions can be made in special cases, such as military service and serious health problems. An extension of an "I" grade in any one course by General Academic Petition shall be allowed only one time, for a maximum total extension of one year.
An "I" may not be changed to a passing grade as the result of re-enrolling in the course.
