Peer Mentoring

What is the Peer Mentoring Program and who may participate?

Peer Mentoring Program assists first year students in making a positive transition to the University. All EOP undeclared students participate in the Peer Mentoring Program during their first year of attendance at Cal Poly Pomona. Students enroll in CPU 299 (Peer Mentoring Program) during the fall, winter, and spring quarters, earning one unit of credit each quarter. The peer mentor meets weekly with students to provide assistance in resolving difficulties and in negotiating the university environment and to ensure they are applying effective study skills and strategies. The program is designed for participants to have fun learning!

Who Are the Peer Mentors?

Peer Mentors are experienced, energetic upper division college students, who have exhibited success in navigating the academic rigors and co-curricular life of the University and serve as positive role models for incoming freshmen. They are all open, friendly, and supportive people who are genuinely interested in helping students become active, involved, and academically successful individuals at Cal Poly Pomona. They function as coaches, friends, and all around positive agents of support.

What are the benefits of participating in the Peer Mentoring Program?

The Peer Mentoring Program offers students the opportunity to develop close working relationships with experienced college students open to discussing personal and academic issues related to their educational goals. Literature shows us that students, who experience meaningful interactions with a positive mentor, demonstrate greater motivation and academic success. This program sets the stage for students to build self-esteem, academic confidence and self-discipline, to enhance motivation and a desire to learn about the University, and become motivated about academic success.

Where is the Peer Mentoring Center?

The Peer Mentoring Center is located in building 94, room 120. You may contact your peer mentor at (909) 869-3375. In addition to offering a safe and exciting environment for mentoring sessions, the Peer Mentoring Center also houses a variety of study skills reference materials for all EOP students interested in giving their study habits a boost.

What job opportunities are there?

Peer mentor recruitment and hiring typically occurs during the Spring and Summer quarters for the Fall quarter. The Peer Mentoring Program is nine months long. All staff are asked to make a commitment to work an entire academic year. Please contact Norma Leon in 94-113 if you are interested in becoming an EOP Peer Mentor.
