Filesharing Warning For UHS Residents
PLEASE READ: Important information about how not to lose your Residence Hall Internet connection if you are using peer-to-peer software such as Aimster, Kazaa, Morpheus, Grokster, LimeWire and BearShare.
Sharing or distributing copyrighted materials is a violation of federal copyright protection laws and a violation of the Residence Hall Technology Acceptable Use Policy. In addition, the "Sharing" of files for others to download, legally or illegally, can significantly impact the University's network connection and impact available bandwidth.
Record companies hire people who do nothing but police the airways to find people who are illegally sharing their music. As a result of their work, the number of students reported to the University by record companies has increased this quarter. The University is required to follow-up quickly on any reports that students or staff are illegally distributing materials or face severe financial penalties. If you are illegally sharing files, your port will be disabled and you will be subject to an investigation which may take 3 to 5 days to complete. Only upon clear evidence that you will no longer share copyrighted files, your connection will be restored.
Avoid interruption in your network connectivity: TURN OFF THE FILE SHARING FEATURE ON YOUR COMPUTER!
