What type of internet access will I have in my room?
All rooms in the Residence Halls and Residential Suites are equipped with direct high-speed access to the Internet via Ethernet ports. You will need a Category 5 (Cat-5) Ethernet cable. You will need a cable long enough to reach from the Ethernet port to your computer, usually around 10 feet.  Please click here for instructions of how to setup internet in your room:

Can I use a wireless router in my room?
Currently, a wireless access point is not available in the Residence Halls or Residential Suites and setting up wireless routers is not permitted.

Will I be able to download music and movies?
Sharing or distributing copyrighted materials is a violation of federal copyright protection laws and a violation of the Residence Hall Technology Acceptable Use Policy.  In addition, the "Sharing" of files for others to download, legally or illegally, can significantly impact the University's network connection and impact available bandwidth, which slows down everyone’s connection to the Internet.

I am having problems with my internet, who do I talk to about this?
UHS Technology team is dedicated to meeting the growing computing needs of the Cal Poly University Housing Services Residential communities. On-site technical support is available for each resident. Our phone number is (909) 869-2694 from Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

What can I do to help protect my computer from getting a virus?
The risk of contracting a computer virus is increasing at a staggering rate. You need to have Anti –Virus software installed to your computer for protection from new viruses. If your computer does not have any anti-virus software, you may pick up a FREE copy of McAfee Anti-Virus from the Housing Office (Building 59). Always exercise caution when you receive attachments, particularly if the sender is unknown to you. In either event, it may be worth scanning before opening and if the source/sender is unknown to you, it is better to delete it.

I’m having trouble connecting my internet?
We have set up a technical support hotline here at the Housing Office. You may contact our technical support team at (909) 869-2694.

What do I need to connect my computer or laptop to the internet?
